Food at Sea: Preservation and Preparation

Description: The galleys in most modern-sailboats have enough convenience that it isn’t too different from cooking at home, but a hundred years ago food aboard ship was very different. It wasn’t all bad, of course, but it wasn’t all great either. Find out about various types of food preservation and preparation in the 18th and early 19th century aboard ship. From standard daily fare to desserts and food prepared for the officer’s mess. Learn what went into it and how it could have differed from ship to ship. We will finish off with several original recipes for ship’s food you would actually want to share with friends, and just in time for Thanksgiving.

Time Sifters Lecture - A Different Point of View by Hermann Trappman

Location: Selby Library, downtown Sarasota
Description: Having attended the Florida Anthropological Society annual meetings for over 30 years and working as an interpretative park ranger for 28 years, Hermann Trappman has devoted his adult life to the study of Florida’s first natives. His artwork is based on hands-on experience - making and reconstructing the tools and weapons, researching the scientific data related to early geological and historical records, and years of meticulous study. Hermann's goal is to build our understanding of America's past and, in particular, Florida's original natives and their unique and distinct culture from the beginning.
