Time: 6:00 pm til 7:30 pm

Location: pin Palmetto Public Library, 923 6th Street West, Palmetto, Florida 34221

Description: Angola was a community of freedom seekers that in the 1810s was located between the Manatee River and Sarasota Bay. It was a place of refuge and peace until it was destroyed in a massive slave raid in 1821. What were the events that brought the freedom seekers to the Manatee River? What happened to those who were captured, and those who escaped? Sherry Svekis of Reflections of Manatee will share the story of how the evidence for Angola was compiled by historians and archaeologists, leading to its recognition as a National Park Service Underground Railroad Network to Freedom site.

Lecture: Remembering Paradise Park in Silver Springs

Time: 7:00 pm til 8:30 pm

Location: Historic Chidsey Library, 701 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34236

Description: 2019 FLORIDA HUMANITIES COUNCIL SPEAKER SERIES by Friends of Sarasota County History Center (FOSCHC) - Remembering Paradise Park in Silver Springs by Lu Vickers. Lu Vickers received her Ph.D. in Creative Writing at Florida State University where she was a Kingsbury Fellow. She has published essays and short stories in numerous magazines such as Salon.com and Apalachee Review.

In 1949, during the days of Jim Crow, when African Americans did not have access to many of the nation’s recreation areas, Silver Springs’ owners Carl Ray and Shorty Davidson did something no other Florida attraction did: they opened a parallel attraction for African Americans downriver from the headspring, calling it “Paradise Park for Colored People.” They did so at the urging of their African American glass bottom boat captains who wanted their families and friends to have access to one of Florida’s most famous natural resources.

Free for FOSCHC Members; $5 for non-members
