Description: Officially, the suffrage movement in the United States began with the Seneca Falls NY Convention in 1848, and ended with the greatest expansion of democracy on a single day in1920, yet few understand how it happened and Florida’s role in this struggle.rnrnLearn about the people of the suffragist movement and the stories behind Florida’s unique role as part of the five million women (and men) who fought for 72 years to get the vote. Hear how women’s suffrage unfolded, why there are so few monuments to this effort and why many of the names have been lost to history.rnrnPresenter Tom Mortenson is a noted national speaker on a variety of topics including government reform, ethics, women’s suffrage, and the Grand Army of the Republic. He has served in leadership positions in government including youth adviser to President Nixon, Racine City Council President and Becker County Administrator. He has served in various roles in the military (Active, Guard, and Reserve) for 39 years and is currently a strategic planner. His interest in the suffragist movement was inspired by his grandmother who was a suffragist in Racine, Wisconsin.
