Archaeology Talk: Tree Island Communities of the Late Archaic

Description: Historic Spanish Point's Archaeology Lecture Series is back! Head to Spanish Point on Thursday, November 8th from 5:00 pm-7:00 pm for a special presentation from Dr. William Locascio of Florida Gulf Coast University.

Archaeological remains excavated by students and faculty from Florida Gulf Coast University have produced evidence of Late Archaic occupation of tree islands in the northern Everglades. The Wedgworth Site near Belle Glade, FL has yielded remains that indicate people used tree islands as places of long-term (multi-generational) occupation. This evidence runs contrary to widely accepted ideas that pre-Columbian peoples did not establish permanent settlements in the Everglades, but rather made frequent forays into the Everglades to acquire resources. This lecture presents evidence from the 2016 and 2018 excavations that indicate that a series of permanent settlements existed at the site between about 1650 BC and 750 BC.
