Description: Historic Spanish Point's Archaeology Lecture Series is back! Head to Spanish Point on Tuesday, September 6th from 5:00-7:00 pm for a special presentation from Dr. Diane Wallan of University of South Florida.
Archaeological research began in 2017 at the Gamble Plantation site in Manatee County Florida, initially established as a sugar plantation in the mid 19th Century. The goal of the archaeology is to increase our understanding of the nuanced history and diverse residents at the site, including the enslaved laborers who lived and labored on the plantation. The project emphasizes community engagement to foster public awareness of the value of cultural resources, archaeological methods, and heritage preservation. During the 2017-2018 field seasons, artifacts spanning the 19th to early 20th century occupations of the plantation were recovered, and several features were identified, contributing to our understanding of the transforming landscape and lifeways at the plantation.
Tickets: $5 for Historic Spanish Point Members ($10 for future Members). Call (941) 966-5214 for tickets.
