Description: Sign up for TROLLEY HISTORY RIDE ALONG. Two trams will be touring Fort Meade and opening up history as folklore and history come together for the entertainment and education of our guests.
Return to the Museum for cookies and punch! $5 per seat. Lap children are free.

Lecture: Making Chief Osceola by Andrew Frank

Time: 5:30 pm til 7:00 pm

Description: Dr. Andrew Frank is an ethnohistorian for Florida State University whose research focuses on the history of the Florida Seminoles and the Native South. Frank’s talk will explore the life and legacy of Chief Osceola, a leader of the Seminole resistance during the Seminole Wars.

Reception with light refreshments to follow (Manatee Village will close at 7pm).
Free admission and parking. No RSVP required, seating on a first come, first served basis.
Open to the public. Ages 13 & up recommended.

Between now and March 2018, Manatee Village Historical Park will present five speakers from the Florida Humanities Council. These talks are made possible by funds from the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture.

Lecture: Old Vero Site: Findings on Paleoindian Archaeology in Florida

Description: Archaeology Lecture Series - The Old Vero Site: Some Recent Findings and Thoughts on Paleoindian Archaeology in Florida by C. Andrew Hemmings, Ph.D., Florida Atlantic University

In 1913 workers dredging a canal near Vero Beach found fossilized bones. State Geologist, Dr. Frank Sellards, visited the site and later began excavations, finding bones of humans and Pleistocene animals. Although convinced his finds confirmed that humans and extinct Late Ice Age animals lived side by side in Florida, his discoveries were dismissed by the scientific community. In 2008 renewed local interest in the site protected it from destruction and lead to a multi-year excavation. Analysis of this material is well underway and is combined with information gathered from old collections and archives. A wealth of new information regarding the Terminal Pleistocene environment, and how the first humans to arrive adapted and flourished in a rapidly changing Pleistocene Florida.
