Lecture: Ca'D Zan: The House of John Ringling

Description: Time Sifters Archaeology Society Lecture Series - Ca'D Zan: The House of John Ringling by Ron McCarty

Ron will review the lives of two of the community’s most beloved patrons of the arts, John and Mable Ringling with some additional information on Charles and Edith Ringling as well. The family came to Sarasota in 1911 and later transformed the area into an upscale resort town that is still enjoyed by thousands today.

Ron has been a member of the curatorial staff at the John and Mable Ringling Museum for the last 36 years with the Ca’d’Zan restoration as part of his responsibilities. He has written “The Work of Dwight James Baum” for Acanthus Press, “The Ca’d’Zan; Ringling’s Venetian Palace” for Scala Publications” and a new book “Ca’d’Zan; A Pictorial Guide to the Ringling Mansion” which is due out after this year .

Sangria and Stories: The Art of Cartography

Location: Tampa Bay History Center, 801 Old Water St, Tampa, Florida 33602

Description: Cartography is the process of mapping a geographical area. It’s also, especially in the pre-digital age, an art, practiced by highly skilled artisan cartographers.

Join Noel Smith, Curator of Latin American & Caribbean Art at USF’s Graphicstudio, as she discusses the methods and techniques used to envision and create selected maps in the History Center’s “Gateways to the Caribbean” exhibition, which features maps dating back to the 16th century.

Sangria and Stories is limited to 25 guests and includes a glass of Columbia Cafe sangria, complimentary garage parking and an in-gallery presentation. Pre-registration is required.
