Florida Conversations: Jose Marti in Tampa

Time: 6:30 pm til 7:30 pm

Location: Tampa Bay History Center, 801 Old Water St, Tampa, FL 33602

Description: Florida Conversations: Jose Marti in Tampa - How a Florida City Helped Found and Fund a Revolution by Alfred J. Lopez, Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Purdue University

Jose Martí was hardly the first Cuban activist to visit Florida, but it was his ability to raise money and build consensus where none had existed that made him the public face and primary architect of the 1895 revolution that eventually ended Spanish rule in Cuba. This presentation will focus on Jose Marti’s 40+ documented visits to six different Florida cities from 1891 – 1895, and how Florida’s early Cuban exile community helped spark the Cuban Revolution against Spain.
