Description: Pirates have been around as long as there have been boats. They ruled the Mediterranean Sea before the pharaohs ruled Egypt or even thought about building the pyramids. Julius Caesar was captured by them and held for ransom. Yet, contrary to either current belief or Hollywood hype, they did play an inspiring role that helped create the Declaration of Independence, win the Revoluntionary War, and craft a US Constitution based on many of their democratic principles.
Sail away with us to hear historical artist Rick Reeves discuss pirate imagery.
Florida Conversations is free and open to the public. It is underwritten by the TBHC Endowment Fund at USF with media sponsorship from WUSF Public Broadcasting. The series is co-sponsored by the USF Libraries Florida Studies Center and the Tampa Bay History Center.
