About the workshop:
A city of majestic oaks and flashy azaleas, Bartow is the seat of Polk County, sometimes referred to as “the fruit basket of Florida” – a title earned by its rich soil, plentiful water resources, and an abundance of phosphate. After an introduction to the area’s historic context at the Polk Historical Museum, we’ll explore the social, cultural, and environmental effects of the agricultural mainstays of citrus, horticulture, and phosphate mining. We will also visit the Alafia River Rendezvous, the largest 1840s interpretive encampment in the southeastern United States. The weekend is an active combination of lectures and discussions with scholars and local experts as well as field excursions to area agricultural enterprises.
The workshop will begin late afternoon Thursday, January 22 and end by noon on Sunday, January 25
