“Pioneer Pinellas as Revealed through a Methodist Register

Description: Methodist preachers rode a sparsely populated circuit along Florida’s west coast during the years before the arrival of the railroad. A single register documents members of the Clear Water Circuit of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, during the years from 1867 through 1893. This book contains records of congregations at early settlements such as Clear Water (now Clearwater), Anona, Indian Pass, Sylvan Abbey, and Bay View. Members of pioneer families, such as Booth, Kilgore, Meares, and McMullen, are well represented. The register resides at the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library, University of South Florida St. Petersburg.
Stanfield, a graduate student in USF’s School of Information with an interest in genealogy, describes the value of this Methodist register, as well as her efforts to transcribe this document and prepare it for digitization. She explains some of the challenges in using documents such as this and also mentions another research project she has started on transcribing Pinellas County Jail records from the 1920s.
