Archaeology of Tampa Bay: From Tocobaga to Weeden Island

Time: 2:00 pm til 3:15 pm

Location: Sulphur Springs Museum and Heritage Center, 1101 East River Cove St, Tampa, FL

Description: Complementing the Sulphur Springs Museum's new "Florida before Statehood exhibit," join Dr. Thomas Pluckhahn, as he explores the rich Native American past of the Tampa Bay area.

In this talk, which complements our traveling exhibit “Florida before Statehood,” Tom Pluckhahn, Ph.D. (USF) explores what archaeology has told us about the late pre-Columbian societies of Tampa Bay, and what future research may reveal. Spanish explorers accounts described warring, territorial chiefdoms ringing the shoreline of the Bay. But archaeological evidence from a thousand years earlier suggests a more dispersed population, with no clearly defined leaders, and little or no warfare. Free admission, refreshments.

Dr. Thomas Pluckhahn is a Professor of Anthropology at the University of South Florida

There will be refreshments and free admission.
