Weedon Island Archaeology Project with Dr John Arthur

Description: Archaeologist Dr. John Arthur will be speaking to the Kiwanis about his discovery of an ancient human burial in Africa sequencing an undiscovered genome, and his work interpreting ancient beer production. His remarks will focus on his work at the University of South Florida St Pete excavating shell mounds at Weedon Island and his discoveries there.

Dr. John Arthur is an Associate Professor at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. He received his Ph.D. in Anthropology in 2000 from the University of Florida. Dr. Arthur has worked in southwestern Ethiopia since 1995 where he has conducted ethnoarchaeological and archaeological research. In Ethiopia, Dr. Arthur discovered a human burial dating to 4,500 years ago, which led to the extraction of ancient DNA, sequencing for the first time a whole ancient genome from Africa. This discovery was published in the premier journal Science.
