Walk Tampa: Tampa Bay Black History Tour

Time: 10:00 am til 12:00 pm

Location: Robert Saunders Public Library, 1505 N Nebraska Ave Tampa, FL 33602

Description: Led by noted local historian Fred Hearns, you’ll tour “the Harlem of the South,” Tampa’s Central Avenue district. Learn about life in Tampa’s African-American community, from the 1890s through the late 1960s. This outdoor trek begins at the new Robert Saunders Public Library and explores the social, political, musical and religious traditions of Tampa’s Black life in Tampa.

Tampa Bay History Center walking tours take place outdoors. Guests will walk approximately one mile. Pre-registration is required.

Florida Chapter of the Association of Gravestone Studies Meeting

Time: 10:00 am til 3:00 pm

Location: Oaklawn Cemetery, 606 E. Harrison Street, Tampa

Description: This event is free and open to the public

Please join the Florida Chapter of the Association of Gravestone Studies for their Spring 2018 meeting. The day will start out at the entrance to Oaklawn Cemetery, 606 E. Harrison Street for registration/check in. The morning program will include the history of Oaklawn, an update on the preservation plan, and stone cleaning techniques and best practices.

At non there will be a lunch break

At 1:30 P.M. We will meet at the entrance to the Italian Club Cemetery, 3009 N. 26th Street and enjoy a guided tour of one of Tampa’s early social club cemeteries which dates to the early 1890’s.
