Archaeology Academy at Weedon Island

Time: 9:30 am til 2:00 pm

Location: Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Dr NE, St Petersburg

Description: Join us for our annual Archaeology Academy, a family-friendly, archaeology-themed day of activities to celebrate Florida Archaeology Month!

Start with our open volunteer lab where you can get your hands on artifacts the native people of Weedon Island left behind. Following the Lab, hear presentations about sea level rise and heritage. Our featured speaker, Libby Carnahan of Pinellas County’s UF/IFAS Extension, will discuss sea level rise and how it will affect the built and natural environments of Tampa Bay. Jeff Moates of the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) will provide an update on the Heritage Monitoring Scouts (HMS) program and briefly focus on impacts to heritage sites.

After the presentations, register to hike to an archaeology site or take a canoe to visit different sites around Weedon Island. Fee for the guided hike is $10.00 per person. Recommended for all ages.
