Walk Tampa: The Ybor City Story

Time: 10:00 am til 11:30 pm

Location: Cuban Club, 2010 N Avenida Republica De Cuba, Ybor City, FL 33605

Description: Join the Tampa Bay History Center for a guided tour of historic Ybor City. This 90-minute walking tour is led by a History Center-trained docent and focuses on the founding and development of Ybor City in the late 19th century early 20th century. You'll tour Tampa's only National Historic Landmark District and learn about the people, social life and work culture of early Ybor. You'll visit mutual aid societies, the Ybor Cigar Factory and other key landmarks, and hear the stories behind one Florida's oldest and most unique communities.

Tours meet in front of the Cuban Club, 2010 N Avenida Republica De Cuba, Ybor City, FL 33605.

Participants will walk a total of approximately one mile along public sidewalks and brick streets. Please be sure to wear comfortable shoes and attire for walking outside. Guests might also want to bring bottled water on the tour.

32nd Annual Civilian Conservation Corps Festival at Highlands Hammock

Time: 10:00 am til 4:00 pm

Location: Highlands Hammock State Park, 5931 Hammock Road Sebring , FL 33872

Description: Celebrate the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps and Highlands Hammock State Park at the 32nd Annual Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Festival!

The festival will honor returning CCC Alumni and features an antique car show, arts and crafts vendors, tram rides, pony rides, children's activities, and heritage craft demonstrations such as blacksmithing, pinecone quilting and pine needle basketry. Community non-profit exhibitors representing historical and environmental/nature organizations and government agencies are also featured.

Highlands Hammock is “home” to the state of Florida CCC Museum and the festival is the park’s signature event. The “CCC Boys” and their families are "welcomed home" annually on the second Saturday of November. Dr. David J. Nelson, Professor of History, Bainbridge State College, Bainbridge, Georgia, is the featured special guest speaker. A former Florida park ranger and state archivist, he is the author of “Florida Crackers and Yankee Tourists: The Civilian Conservation Corps, the Florida Park Service and the Emergence of Modern Tourism.”
