Underwater Archaeology of the Gulf of Mexico with Dr. Joseph Cozzi

Description: The waters in and around the Gulf of Mexico contain archaeological deposits that date from early Native Americans up through shipwrecks involved in the exploration, colonization and industrialization of North America. Recent discoveries, like the LaSalle Shipwreck in Texas and the Emanuel Point Ships in Florida, are portals to specific days in the past when ambitious human endeavors ended tragically. Dr. Cozzi, who directed fieldwork on these projects, will share his experiences and place this research in the context of the history of Florida, the United States and the world. Light refreshments will be served.

Description: Archaeology Lecture Series - Materializing Ontology in Monumental Form: Recent Advances in Paleoamerican Research in Florida by Albert C. Goodyear, Ph.D

Current research by Dr. Goodyear on the extensive Ike Rainey collection in Ocala is aiding immensely in developing a fluted point survey for the State of Florida. The number of Clovis points is easily equal to the numbers reported from adjacent states and may in fact exceed them. One of goals of the Southeastern Paleoindian Survey (SEPAS) is to record the distribution of Clovis and other fluted points from the Tampa Bay region up to and including North Carolina. By having a dense series of maps it should be possible to begin to compare adjacent and related Clovis bands over an 800km transect north and south. Several significant studies currently underway in Florida are also expanding preClovis research at places like Vero Beach, Wakulla Springs, and the CCA site originally discovered by Barbara Purdy.
