Radiocarbon Dating Workshop

Description: Join archaeologists from the Florida Pubic Archaeology Network, New College Public Archaeology Lab, and Sarasota County for this free Radiocarbon Dating Workshop. They will discuss different techniques used to determine the age of artifacts and archaeology sites. Come learn about the most common types of relative and absolute dating methods and how scientists figured out the dates of the archaeology site at Phillippi Estate Park.

Lecture: The Resurrection of Camp Lawton: the World's Largest Prison

Description: Time Sifters Archaeology Society Lecture Series - The Resurrection of Camp Lawton: The World's Largest Prison by John K Derden, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of History, East Georgia State College

Camp Lawton, a Confederate Prisoner of War Camp, was constructed in 1864, a stockade which held Union soldiers during the American Civil War. Once called “the world’s largest prison,” it was occupied for only six weeks before being abandoned at the advance of Sherman’s army through Georgia. “The Resurrection of Camp Lawton” will contain a brief summary of the history of the Confederate prison along with a discussion of the ongoing archaeological work (started in 2010) that has been done as a collaboration of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Georgia Southern University, and the State of Georgia Historic Preservation Division. What archaeologists found was an intact site and hundreds of artifacts that together shed light on the experience of the POWs.

Dr. John K. Derden was born at Fort Benning, Georgia and has degrees from the University of Georgia (B.S.Ed., M.A. and Ph.D. in history).
