Exploring Fishing Heritage at Jiggs Landing

Time: 9:00 am til 11:00 am

Location: Jiggs Landing Nature Preserve, 6106 63rd Street East, Bradenton 34203

Description: Come on out to Jiggs Landing Nature Preserve and spend the morning casting back in time, learning about the early days of Jiggs Landing and reviving the dreams of landing a trophy bass at this historic fish camp. We will get a glimpse of the lifestyle of these days as we take a tour of the late-forties replica cabin and enjoy the enduring pastime of fishing along these shorelines. Participants will have a chance to try their luck at fishing-themed activities and we encourage you to cast out your lines to see what you can catch! Program suitable for all ages.

FREE! Register by calling 941-742-5757 X5. Note: Anyone 16 or older needs a valid freshwater fishing license to fish at Jiggs Landing, but a fishing license is not required for other festival events. All state rules and regulations apply for fishing.

Archaeology Academy

Time: 10:00 am til 1:00 pm

Location: Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Dr NE St. Petersburg, 33702

Description: Archaeology Academy: Heritage Monitoring Scouts - Come learn about the new Heritage Monitoring Scouts (HMS) program and the prehistoric people who made Weedon Island home. After the presentations, register to hike to an archaeology site or take a canoe to visit a number of different sites around Weedon Island. Fee for each activity is $10.00 per participant and registration is required.

Schedule at a glance:
10:00 AM – 11:00 AM – Presentations
11:15 AM – 1:00 PM – Site tours

Please choose only one of the following activities. These activities will occur at the same time:

Site Hike – Hike with an archaeologist to part of the Weeden Island archaeology site to see an excavation and learn all about the site and the people that lived there long ago.

Canoe Tours – Heritage Monitoring Scout program - Maneuver canoes to archaeological sites around Weedon Island. You will get the chance to get off the water and monitor conditions of actual archaeology sites.

Recommended for all ages.
