Description: Join us for the Our Florida, Our History Lecture Series to hear Anthony E. Dixon talk about "African Diaspora Influence on the Growth of Florida."
This discussion will examine the unique relationship between Florida and African descendants, chronologically demonstrating the direct link between African descendants and the growth of the state. Water ways, such as the Appalachicola and St. Johns Rivers are crucial to understanding Florida Maroon’s culture and survival.
Anthony Dixon is Founder and President of Archival and Historical Research Associates, LLC (AHRA), a public history company. He is also the Archivist and Assistant Professor of History at Bethune - Cookman University and Chairman of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission. As a public historian his mission is to help “bridge the gap between academia and the public” while preparing the next generation of historic preservationists. His several books include Up from Incarceration: Dispelling Myths of the Thug Life, and A Timeline of the African Diaspora Experience in Florida.
