Kolomoki, located in the Chattahoochee River valley of southwestern Georgia, was among the largest villages of the Middle and Late Woodland periods in the Southeastern United States. From its founding around 350 CE, Kolomoki was of regional importance and remained so for approximately 600 years. During this interval, significant changes took place at the site; at least 11 earthworks were constructed, and Kolomoki’s village grew to nearly a kilometer in diameter, far surpassing nearby contemporaneous villages. In contrast to previous interpretations of the site, the results from recent investigations at Kolomoki paint a picture of a socially diverse settlement with a dynamic history.
