Preserving the 1,100 year old Weedon Island Saltwater Dugout Canoe

Time: 10:00 am til 11:00 am

Location: Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center, 1800 Weedon Dr NE, St Pete

Description: Many lessons were learned as the Alliance for Weedon Island Archaeological Research and Education, Inc. worked to conserve the Weedon Island Preserve prehistoric saltwater dugout canoe. Robert Austin, Ph.D. and Phyllis Kolianos, M.A. discuss the trials and tribulations of the pioneering preservation of this significant waterlogged wood discovery and the knowledge that has been gained from this effort.

Explore Little Salt Spring with hands-on activities and demonstrations so you can investigate the past like an archaeologist! This free workshop is appropriate for all ages and backgrounds.

Archaeologists from the Florida Public Archaeology Network will host this free information session for educators. Come learn strategies for integrating archaeology and the prehistory of Little Salt Spring into your classroom through Inquiry Based lesson plans and activities.
