USF OLLI Class: Re-Placing Fort Brooke

Time: 10:00 am til 12:00 pm

Location: Tampa Bay History Center, 801 Old Water Street, Tampa

Description: Just like broken bottles and soldiers' buttons, maps are artifacts of the past and can help us to understand the layout of Fort Brooke and the impact it has had on the development of downtown Tampa. In this class, we will look at the history of the establishment of Fort Brooke. We will also take a look at other archaeological work that has been done in downtown Tampa.

Note:
Convenient parking at the Amalie Arena Blue parking lot, adjacent to the History Center, is $4.00 per day. You must get a token at the Center's main desk inside to get the $4.00 rate.

Jeff Moates, MA, RPA, is a faculty member in USF's anthropology department. He is a member of the West Central Regional Center, Florida Public Archaeology Network.

Florida's Shipwreck Preserves: Living Maritime Heritage You Can Visit

Time: 6:30 pm til 7:30 pm

Location: Safety Harbor Museum and Cultural Center, 329 Bayshore Blvd S, Safety Harbor

Description: Clues to Florida’s maritime history are scattered along the state’s coasts, bays, and rivers in the form of shipwrecks relating to waterborne exploration, commerce, and warfare. This lecture features Florida’s Museums in the Sea, historic shipwrecks that have been interpreted for divers and snorkelers as a way to educate citizens and visitors about the real treasure of Florida’s shipwrecks – their history.
