Time: 4:30 pm til 5:30 pm

Location: Gaspar's Grotto Patio, 8448 N 56th St., Tampa

Description: Geomorphological Assessment of Plantation Agriculture in Antigua, West Indies by Graduate student Anthony Tricarico
Environmental degradation resulting from colonial plantation agriculture in Antigua, West Indies, exemplifies the harms of anthropogenic landscape modification. Geomorphological survey and analysis of certain soils surrounding the Betty’s Hope Plantation, sought to model the impacts of colonial farming on local landforms, while providing a greater understanding of the consequences for today’s residents. Intensive agricultural practices have led to the instability of the ecological resources of the island, but these impacts have not been largely studied in relation to their greater human-ecological consequences. This analysis is being conducted to understand the legacies of British colonialism on landscape modification. This work is concerned with differentiating and modeling erosion and landscape degradation resulting from intensive agriculture. Geomorphological survey and analysis at Betty’s Hope is ongoing, with an ultimate goal of providing a complete picture of land degradation island-wide and across different time scales.
