CSS Georgia: The Ladies' Gunboat

Time: 6:00 pm til 7:00 pm

Location: Selby Library, 1331 First St., Sarasota 34236

Description: Time Sifters Archaeological Society Speaker Program - CSS Georgia: The Ladies' Gunboat - Michael L. Jordan

Michael Jordan is an award-winning journalist, filmmaker, historian, and author, garnering an EMMY nomination, Edward R. Murrow Award, and GA Associated Press “Best Documentary” award for his work over the years. His Time Sifters presentation will focus on the history of the Civil War ironclad CSS Georgia and the recovery of its wreckage from the Savannah harbor. The Georgia was a unique vessel—the only warship on either side of the conflict to be funded with money raised by women. Built from scratch in 1861 without written plans, it was sheathed in heavy railroad iron when no typical iron plate armor could be obtained. Rediscovered in 1968, its wreckage has revealed thousands of artifacts ranging from belt buckles, buttons, dishware, sword hilts, and bayonet handles, to cannons, armor sections, and a propeller. Michael has been covering all the archaeological work on the wreck site for the past 12 years, and his presentation will be comprehensive and informative.
