La Florida: Five Centuries of Hispanic Presence

Time: 6:00 pm til 7:00 pm

Location: Tampa Bay History Center, 801 Old Water Street, Tampa, FL

Description: Don’t miss this fascinating program that will examine 500 years of Hispanic influence on the state of Florida. Please join Rachel A. May, co-editor of the deeply-researched book, La Florida-Five Hundred Years of Hispanic Presence, as she moderates a discussion on this subject along with panelists:

• Jane Landers, Vanderbilt University Professor of History
• Jorge Duany, Director of the Cuban Research Institute and Professor of Anthropology at Florida International University
• Gary Mormino, Frank E. Duckwall professor emeritus of history at USFSP and the scholar in residence at the Florida Humanities Council.

Professor May is director and associate professor of the Institute for the Study of Latin America and the Caribbean Latin American Studies and International Human Rights at the University of South Florida. The panel discussion will lead listeners — who are encouraged to participate in the conversation — to observe how La Florida first emerged as an elusive possession of Spain, up to our state’s current history and its role as a modern transatlantic crossroad.

Florida Conversations is free and open to the public.
