Description: This talk presents an overview of the diverse archaeological record of people in Florida at the end of the last Ice Age and at the beginning of the Holocene (modern) epoch, when abrupt climate changes were taking place. Drawing on Florida’s place in the Peopling process in North America, the presentation will present evidence of apparent settling in and cultural continuity for more than 3000 years in Florida, times when sea levels were significantly lower. In addition to the kinds of early sites and tools known from Florida, an animation will show the extent of the peninsula with rising sea levels. The presentation also will highlight recent research for these early sites offshore and exciting directions for future discoveries.
Michael Faught is a pioneer in the field of submerged prehistoric archaeology and is among the nation’s leading experts on identifying drowned landscape features in sub-bottom profiler data. He is an expert in Paleoindian and early Archaic archaeology, and he co-directed the Paleoindian Database of the Americas project and website.
