Archaeology Works: Fishing

Time: 6:30 pm til 7:30 pm

Location: New College Public Archaeology Lab, 5800 Bay Shore Rd, Sarasota

Description: Along the Gulf Coast, archaeologists have found tantalizing clues about how Florida’s first residents fished these waters. Learn how archaeologists study artifacts linked to fishing like ancient fishing hooks, water craft, and nets then learn how Cuban fisherman fished the same waters in the more recent past. Archaeologists from the New College Public Archaeology Lab and the Florida Public Archaeology Network will be on hand with artifact displays and hands-on activities that allow you to explore the past just like an archaeologist. Try your hand at making a fishing net, learn about how archaeologists study the fish people were eating from the tiny bones they left behind, see how well you would do throwing a cast net like a Cuban fisherman, and much more! This event is designed for people of all ages and is free and open to the public.
