Description: Looking for Angola – The Archaeology of Freedom is the topic on Friday, February 7. We will be looking for Angola, an almost forgotten 1800’s Black Seminole settlement with the expert help of Uzi Baram.
Dr. Baram is an anthropologist who teaches a wide range of archaeology and cultural anthropology courses at the New College of the University of South Florida in Sarasota. He was born in Israel and raised and educated in the US. Along the way his passion became the intersection of past and present, the intersection of archeology and politics.
Angola, a community of former enslaved Africans and Seminole Indians was located along the Manatee River on Florida’s west coast. The settlement was destroyed and sank from memory. Who were these people and what became of them? Dr. Baram led the team that looked for the answers.
