Archaeology Lecture: Florida Paleoindian Point Typology

Time: 7:00 pm til 8:00 pm

Location: Weedon Island Preserve 1800 Weedon Dr NE St. Petersburg, 33702

Description: Mental Templates and a Revised Typology for Florida Paleoindian Points

Jim Dunbar, Ph.D.

How many ways are there to make lanceolate points from Southeastern Coastal Plain chert? More than has been recognized in the past. Part of the problem has been inadequate sample sizes, a problem solved by Dave Thulman’s doctoral work that included his monumental documentation effort. The analysis of more than a thousand specimens included - morphology, distinctive finishing and post production maintenance, structural considerations, and identifying a type’s mental template. Together these aspects of analysis are used to revise the Florida Paleoindian point typology.
