Patrick Smith's Florida IS a Land Remembered

Description: One Book One Community is celebrating its 10-year anniversary with the announcement of the 2014 One Book at special events in October featuring the multi-media show, “Patrick Smith’s Florida is A Land Remembered,” honoring the first One Book that was read and discussed in 2003, Smith’s “A Land Remembered.”
Patrick Smith’s son, Rick Smith, will make the presentation that shares his father’s real-life, extraordinary experiences with Florida pioneers, the Seminoles, migrant workers, “‘river rats” of Mississippi, the social injustices of the South, and the challenges of the present. Sarasota County’s shows kick off Rick Smith’s second tour through Florida.
“His tour last year received rave reviews with hundreds in attendance at each presentation,” said Barb McDonald, outreach coordinator for the Sarasota County Library System.
The shows are free, and open to the public. Pre-registration is required due to limited seating.

Biological and Cultural Variations in the Weedon Island Complex

Description: Biological and Cultural Variations in the Weedon Island Complex and Manasota Culture

This presentation will discuss the biological variation found within the Weeden Island Complex and Manasota culture in relation to the cultural variation found within the sites associated with these two cultures. Burial practices, pottery styles, and pottery use suggest a shared ideology and social interaction over a large geographic area, yet archaeologists have long argued the intricacies of the relationship between these two groups. My research utilizes craniometrics to examine the biological variation of populations associated with the Weeden Island/Manasota Complex to better understand how these populations related to each other. I then compare these findings to the archaeological record of these cultures. Findings raise questions about the cultural and biological continuity of the Weeden Island Complex and support the distinction of the Manasota culture. In particular, Bay Pines and Bayshore Homes provide interesting insight into these relationships and to the Tampa Bay area’s shifting relationship with these cultures.

Spirit Voices from Old Manatee

Description: Your rendezvous with the past awaits … Manatee Village Historical Park is pleased to present Season III of Spirit Voices from Old Manatee. This year’s popular living history production brings new characters - Polly Parker (May-de-lo-yee of the Bird Clan) and June Adams - to the limelight with insights into the haunting tales of the settlers of the Manatee lands. Shows will be staged at the 1850 Old Manatee Burying Grounds and Manatee Village Historical Park in Bradenton, Florida.
