The Making of St. Petersburg

Description: The new book, The Making of St. Petersburg, captures the character of this bay city through the telling of significant events, from the Spanish clash with indigenous peoples to the creation of the downtown waterfront parks and grand hotels. Local historican, Will Michaels, presentation will chronicle St. Petersburg's rich history including the world's first airline and major league baseball.

By Archaeologist Jeff Moates

JEFF MOATES earned a master’s degree in history/ historical archaeology and a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from the University of West Florida. His research and professional interests include 19th century settlements along the Florida Gulf Coast, Florida’s maritime trade, and the development of historic working watercraft. Jeff has worked in archaeology and related fields, as well as an underwater archaeologist with the Bureau of Archaeological Research in Tallahassee where he acted as administrator for Florida’s exploration and salvage contract program, and as director of the West Central Regional Archaeology Center. He was museum curator at the Florida Maritime Museum in Cortez, a historic waterfront community located in Manatee County.
