Tarpon Springs Maritime and Music Festival

Time: 11:00 am til 6:00 pm

Location: Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks, 761 Dodecanese Boulevard, Tarpon Springs, FL

Description: On Saturday, July 14, from 11am to 6pm, the City of Tarpon Springs will present the third annual Gulf Maritime Festival. As one of Florida’s few remaining downtown working waterfronts, Tarpon Springs’ Sponge Docks is the best venue to showcase Gulf Maritime folklife from Cortez to Cedar Key to Apalachicola. Demonstrators will explore sponge diving & sponge processing; making diving helmets and nets; foodways; fishing, clam farming, boat building, model boats, and much more.

The free festival will also present music and dance associated with Gulf maritime communities, as well as interviews with those involved in maritime activities. Among the many participants will be National Heritage Fellow Nicholas Toth (sponge diving helmets), as well as several Florida Folk Heritage Award winners: Taso Karistinos (sponge diver/captain), Wayne Martin (bateau boats & old-time fiddling), George Saroukos (Greek boatbuilding), George Soffos (Greek music), and Mike Berg (duck decoys).
