The Role of the County Archaeologist

Description: The Role of the County Archaeologist and the State of Miami-Dade’s Archaeological Resources Jeff Ransom has more than 16 years experience in archaeology. He began his career as a cave archaeologist studying the ritual use of caves by the ancient Maya. After moving to South Florida he worked on the excavations of the Miami Circle. His cave research has expanded to the Caribbean, currently focusing on prehistoric cave use in the Bahamas. He has served as the Miami-Dade County Archaeologist since 2006 and is responsible for the inventory, evaluation, protection, and management of the County’s prehistoric and historic resources. Join us for what is certain to be an informative and enjoyable lecture.

Florida’s Statewide Comprehensive Plan

Description: The Florida Department of State’s Division of Historical Resources will sponsor a series of meetings around the state in April and May, to solicit public comments and input for the development of Florida’s Statewide Comprehensive Historic Preservation Plan.

In order for Florida to be eligible to participate in the federal historic preservation program, every five years the Division of Historical Resources revises and updates the plan.

The primary purpose of Florida’s historic preservation planning program is to provide guidance for the implementation of sound planning procedures for the location, identification, and protection of the state’s archaeological and historical resources. It will provide guidance for everyone involved in historic preservation throughout the state.

She had the opportunity for the traveling as President of the International Committee for Museums of Ethnography. Meeting yearly for a week in February, the committee members are taken to locations in South Korea to see a variety of museums and living cultural heritage. Dr. Fromm’s lecture will cover displays and exhibits from her travels through a Power Point presentation.

Heritage Awareness Diving Seminar

Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS), The Spring 2011 Heritage Awareness Diving Seminar will focus on providing COURSE DIRECTORS, INSTRUCTOR TRAINERS, and INSTRUCTORS with a greater knowledge of how to proactively protect shipwrecks, artificial reefs, and other underwater cultural sites. Upon completion of the Seminar, you will be able to teach the new Heritage Awareness Specialty Course (approved by NAUI, PADI, and SSI) and will know how to promote sustainable underwater heritage tourism in your area.

This two-day seminar will include one day of classroom-based learning and one day of in-field training. A welcome reception will be held on the evening of May 23, 2011. URANIUM SERIES DATING: SOUTH FLORIDA FINDINGS

Description: How do archaeologists and geologists find the age of found artifacts and materials? One method is Uranium series dating (USDD). This method has been successfully applied to corals, travertine, eggshell, tooth enamel, and wood, but less successfully to oyster shell, peat, cementum, dentine, and bone. In Florida the abundance of carbonates, flora, and fauna in close association provides opportunities for studies on uranium uptake and comparative dating with Electron Spin Resonance (ESR), Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL), and Radiocarbon techniques
Under conditions of burial in impermeable matrix almost every type of sample can be dated. The Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport (TNT) vertebrate locality is an example of this condition where USDD was used. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, work began on a new Dade Collier Jetport in the Everglades. During construction of the first runway (still in use today for training flights), a barrow pit was excavated to provide fill for the runway. This fill contained fossil bones and teeth of horses, camels, and proboscideans. The limestone containing the bones was set aside as it was not suitable as runway fill and othe

Description: The ancient Huastec civilization is thought to date back to approximately the 10th century BCE, although their most productive period of civilization is usually considered to be the Postclassic, between the fall of Teotihuacan and the rise of the Aztec Empire. They inhabited the states of Hidalgo and Veracruz, concentrating along the Panuco River and the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The Huastec were admired for their abilities as musicians by other Mesoamerican peoples. Some of the ceramics found dating to the Middle Formative period resemble Preclassic objects from Uaxactún, a Maya site in the Petén. Their distinctive sculpture opens a window to this little-known civilization. Past IMS President Marta Barber will also share IMS member photos from a recent visit to the area.

Between Two Volcanic Eruptions: The Ancient Maya Village of Cerén

Description: A cataclysmic volcanic eruption occurred from the Ilopango Caldera, now dated to the early 6th century CE. It rendered El Salvador and surrounding areas uninhabitable, and eliminated the Miraflores branch of Maya civilization. Local recovery required a few decades, and the Maya that founded Cerén were among the earliest colonizers. They established a surprisingly successful adaptation, life style, and exuberant religious life within the household and at the community level. That came to an abrupt end when a very close volcanic vent, Loma Caldera, erupted and buried the village under 4-7 meters of volcanic ash. Payson D. Sheets, Ph.D from the Univ. of Colorado–Boulder will explore their successes in the middle of the Classic Period.
Dr. Sheets has been an Associate and Full Professor at the University of Colorado from 1974 until the present. His areas of specialization include Mesoamerican archaeology, hazards research, lithic technology, ancient adaptations, remote sensing, and geophysical applications. He is the author of three books. His most recent is Before the Volcano Erupted: The Ancient Ceren Village in Central America.

The Last Days of a Maya Royal Court

Description: The site of El Perú (named Waká in inscriptions) was occupied for nearly a thousand years, and its people participated in many of the most famous events of the Maya Classic period. They saw the arrival of Siyaj’ K’ak’, the powerful general “from the west” whose conquests changed the course of Maya history; they were willing allies in the drive by Yuknoom Ch’een II, the great Snake king of Calakmul, to dominate the Maya Lowlands.

But in the end, as with all the cities of the Classic period, the reign of Waká’s divine kings came to a close in the first decades of the 9th Century CE. This lecture, by David F. Lee, Ph.D. – Waká Research Foundation, St. Louis, MO- presents some of the remarkable evidence uncovered at the city’s royal palace complex during more than four years of research with El Perú-Waká Archaeological Research Project.

HISTORIC PROPERTIES WORKSHOP by Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach

Description: The Preservation Foundation will be presenting this year’s Historic Properties Workshop on Friday, November 16th. It is the seventh historic properties workshop in as many years. Subtitled What’s Next?: The Future of Historic Preservation, it is open to the public and FREE to all.

The workshop is designed to create an awareness within the community about the treatment and maintenance of historic properties. Property owners, real estate brokers, architects, builders, city planners, Town serving members of the Landmarks Preservation Commission, ARCOM and Town Council are among the target audience.

The lectures and discussion will be held at the Foundation’s offices in the Rosenthal Lecture Room from 8:45am to noon. The offices are located at 311 Peruvian Avenue.

DuPuis' Prehistory mystery

Description: a Paleo-rific time at DuPuis’ Visitors’ Center on Saturday February 2, 2013! Sessions are 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Chris Davenport, County Historic Preservation Officer, will speak about 4 of DuPuis’ major prehistoric earthworks. The lecture will examine the sites that spanned 4000 years. He will discuss when they were occupied, why they were built and what happened to the native people. Following the lecture, participants will explore DuPuis sites via swamp buggy. This workshop costs $50 per person so register for a morning or afternoon session. The proceeds support the Florida Center for Environmental Studies Environmental Education Program at DuPuis Management Area. Under the Volcano II, Maribios and Chontales

Description: Dr. Clifford Brown will talk about he and his colleagues’ 2013 season of survey and excavations in northwest Nicaragua. The team located a number of new sites. They focused their excavations in the eastern and northern parts of the Department of Chinandega, at sites in the municipalities of Chichigalpa and Somotillo. Near Chichigalpa, they found a large site which has interesting stratigraphy as well as seemingly distinctive ceramics. The location and the ruins of a Colonial period church strongly imply that it is the lost Maribio town of Mazatega.
In the north, at the site of Dulce Nombre de Jesús, they found an extensive field of stone mounds as well as numerous prehistoric stone house foundations. Part of the site has a very unusual obsidian industry, while the remainder has a more conventional one. Finally, the site of La Trinidad produced patches of dense midden with cultural features. That site produced tantalizing evidence of ground stone tool production.

Description: BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. - The Broward County Historical Commission, located at the historic West Side Grade School, 301 Harmon (S.W. 13) Ave., Fort Lauderdale, will host its January Brown Bag Historical Lunch Program beginning at noon on Thursday, January 16, 2014.

The Pine Island and Long Key, located in the Town of Davie, is a unique geological feature. It is the highest natural land in Broward County and on it lay 35 known Native American archaeological sites. This Brown Bag Lunch discussion, presented by Paul Callsen, explores how native people probably used the Pine Island and Long Key in their search for sustenance, how the sites were arranged over a period of 2,000 years and how their locations had shifted over time. Finally, the talk will look at many of the sites as they are today and we ask the question, “Did we do a good job of protecting our cultural resources?” The Pine Island and Long Key are home to four parks as well as bike and horse paths; visits to these facilities are one of the best ways that families can directly and economically experience a conversation with the distant past.

Rebecca Stitt, current Florida Atlantic University graduate student, will be presenting on her recent excavations at the Boynton Mound Complex located in Palm Beach County. The Boynton Mound Complex itself is composed of sand mounds, midden mounds, and earthworks similar to the Belle Glade culture. It was originally excavated in the 1970s, wherein evidence of European trade was found. Building on this research, Ms. Stitt will present a robust history of the evolution of our current understanding about the culture that once called the complex home.

Hidden Histories of the Dry Tortugas

Description: Although much of the military and architectural history of Fort Jefferson is well-documented, there are some interesting details that have not been the subject of any study. People have been compelled to leave messages on the walls of the fort using a variety of materials. These inscriptions span the first few decades of the 20th century, a time when the fort was not being officially utilized. Upcoming renovations to preserve and stabilize the fort’s overall architectural integrity put these smaller details at risk. The Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) partnered with the National Park Service to conceive of a long term preservation solution for this historic graffiti and carried out a photographic documentation of the at-risk area. Not only did the project save this unique and fragile resource, but it unlocked a hidden history: The graffiti dates from the 1880’s to the present day, and represents the only records of the fort being used during periods of its abandonment.

Heritage Awareness Diving Seminar

Description: Tours of Hillsboro Inlet Light Station and the Lighthouse are run by the Hillsboro Lighthouse Preservation Society, an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The lighthouse is located alongside Hillsboro Inlet, and is only accessible by boat from the Sands Harbor Hotel and Marina. The tour is subject to Mother Nature and her weather and sea conditions.

Hillsboro Lighthouse is an active aid to navigation, and it is only via special dispensation from the Department of Homeland Security and the United States Coast Guard that the Hillsboro Lighthouse Preservation Society is able to have up to eight (8) tours per year of the Hillsboro Inlet Light Station and open the grounds to the public.

A current HLPS membership or a $25 per person transportation fee is required for the boat ride from the Sands Hotel and Marina in Pompano Beach.

Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse: Hike Through History

Description: Discover the topography and natural history of Jupiter’s National Conservation Lands historic site. This 2 mile trek passes through historic points of interest on the 120-acre Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area. Ecological Indian at Crystal River

Description: An Investigation into the Image of the Ecological Indian in the Woodland Period at Crystal River
Or - Oyster Exploitation?
The Crystal River overlooks one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the south, the Crystal River Archaeological State Park. This presentation will focus on the field work done at Crystal River and the analysis of the material remains which were found at the site. More specifically, our speaker, Alex Delgado, seeks to address the issue of over-exploitation of resources at the site. In this case, over 600 oyster shells were meticulously analyzed in order to gain insights into the subsistence patterns of the original inhabitants of the area. The presentation will also seek to address the pervasive image of the, "Ecological Indian". Were Native Americans mindful of ecology?

Our presenter Alex Delgado is a graduate student studying archaeology at the University of South Florida. He has completed his field work at the Crystal River mound site in Central Florida. His research interests include North American Prehistory, subsistence patterns, early village and state formation, resource exploitation, and experimental archaeology.

Atlantic Ais in the Late Seventeenth Century

Description: The Ais and other Native Americans of Florida's east coast expertly exploited their local riverine and marine environment. From this maritime adaptation, they honed various aquatic skills, including adept swimming and skillful diving. Such expertise, however, did not go unnoticed by the coming Europeans. In the 1680s, for example, English and French buccaneers raided the Florida coast to acquire indigenous divers to work a sunken Spanish treasure ship in the Bahamas. Using this captive labor force, the buccaneers and Bahamians, along with wreckers from as far as New York, New England, Jamaica, and Barbados, quickly salvaged the wreck's silver cargo. They subsequently sold the surviving field of the "Red" Atlantic and the Atlantic slave trade, and using a variety of English and Spanish documents, Peter thus examines the Atlantic Ais in the late seventeenth century/

Hands, Words, and Brains: What Cognitive Archaeology Can Teach Us

Description: Lana Ruck's research focuses on Lower Paleolithic archaeology, which dates to roughly 2.6 million years ago, long before modern humans existed. Stone tools are the primary archaeological materials that preserve from this time, and through much study, we have learned that stone tool-making was an important step towards "becoming human" for our ancestors.

Cognition, language, and technology are thought of as "uniquely human," but many of our ancestors thought and spoke like us too! She will be talking about how primitive stone tool-making relates to traits like handedness and language, and discuss how and why these behaviors evolved together over millions of years.

Description: “Çatalhöyük, Turkey : Living with the Dead, Goddess Worship, & Gender Equality”

Presented by Meryl Shriver-Rice, phD
The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Çatalhöyük was first discovered in the late 1950s and excavated by James Mellaart between 1961 and 1965. The Neolithic site rapidly gained international fame due to its immense size and dense occupation of the settlement, as well as the spectacular wall paintings and venus figurines found at the site.
As an archaeological site, Çatalhöyük is unique in that it has been continually excavated for over 20 years (since 1993) with teams of over 100 archaeologists from multiple countries working in the field and at the on-site laboratories. Dr. Rice will be discussing how the site has gained recognition by contemporary Goddess worshipers and various Pagan organizations from around the world as a sacred space. Çatalhöyük is most known for its unusual burial rites, evidence of gender equality, and lavish mural paintings.

Like most fashion, the cut, shape and silhouette of patchwork clothing has shifted to meet the needs and trends of Tribal members. However, a quick study shows each piece still harkens to its history. Wearing patchwork is a statement of fashion, of pride, and an acknowledgement of history.

Description: Michele Williams, Ph.D., RPA is the Director for the Southeastern and Southwest Regions of Florida Public Archaeology Network at Florida Atlantic University. Dr. Williams has participated in excavations throughout the southeastern United States for the past 25 years.

Well, Dr. Williams will be speaking to us about her specialty within archaeology - the historical relevance of medicinal plants dating all the way back to the times of prehistoric Native Americans and up to the South Florida gardens we nurture and enjoy today.
Bring along a tasty plate to share, jot down any questions you'd like to ask Dr. Williams at the conclusion of her presentation and head over to Plantation Heritage Park's Fountain Room to learn something new about this very popular and intriguing subject. 26th Annual Old Florida Festival

Description: You can live in the present any old time. Why not spend a day in the past with a Calusa Indian, a Seminole family, a Civil War soldier, Cracker cattleman or Spanish Conquistador and dozens of other costumed time-travelers at the Old Florida Festival, scheduled for March 7 and 8 at the Collier County Museum. The annual family-style adventure brings together over 100 of the state’s finest historical reenactors, craftworkers and living history presenters to recreate over ten centuries of everyday life on the Southwest Florida frontier.

Continuous all-day demonstrations will be offered by the blacksmith, soap maker, telegraph operator, flintknapper, basket weaver and other craftworkers, along with 1800s-style music and entertainment, cannon and musket firing, a Seminole War skirmish, and authentic military drills by soldiers from the American Revolution to World War II. Artists, sutlers and traders will also offer handmade gifts, toys and craft items for your homestead, as well as kettle corn, old-fashioned candy, Southern barbeque, and other traditional treats from the past.

Florida's diverse history and prehistory stretches back over 12,000 years. Every March, statewide programs and events celebrating Florida Archaeology Month are designed to encourage Floridians and visitors to learn more about the archaeology and history of the state, and to preserve these important parts of Florida's rich cultural heritage. Florida Archaeology Month 2014 explores Florida's first people, the Paleo Indians.

Costa Rica and Archaeology - ASSF lecture

Description: When the word ecotourism was coined in 1983, the inventor must have had Costa Rica in mind. The country had established its National Park in 1970. However, when birdwatchers found that the country had 850 species of birds, tourists began to flock into the country and the government began a program to preserve its tremendous biodiversity and to reap the economic benefits of tourism. Just lately it has decided to finance archaeological investigations. This presentation will also include a visit to the Pre Columbian site of El Guayabo de Turrialba.
Dr. Anne Stewart was born in Indiana. Near her home were Adena Indian mounds which helped her develop a lifelong interest in Precolumbian cultures. She received her BA from Baldwin Wallace University, MS from Florida State and Doctorate from Nova Southeastern.

Heritage Awareness Diving Seminar

Description: The Heritage Awareness Diving Seminar is intended to explain the advantages of conserving shipwrecks and other submerged cultural resources, not only to preserve information about our collective past, but also to preserve the vibrant ecosystems that grow around historic shipwrecks. HADS focuses on providing scuba training agency Course Directors, Instructor Trainers, and Instructors with a greater knowledge of how to proactively protect shipwrecks, artificial reefs, and other underwater cultural sites as part of the marine environment. HADS consists of two evenings of classroom instruction and one day of open water diving; participants receive the HADS workbook and a CD with all PowerPoint presentations to use in their own classes. Upon completion of HADS, participants can teach the new Heritage Awareness Diving Specialty Course, approved by PADI, NAUI, and SDI, as well as incorporate underwater historic preservation into other courses. HADS is taught in partnership with the Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research.

Submerged Sites Education and Archaeological Stewardship (SSEAS)

Description: The Submerged Sites Education and Archaeological Stewardship This program is intended to train sport divers in the methods of non-disturbance archaeological recording and then give these trained divers a mission. The mission focuses on investigating sites in NOAA’s Automated Wreck and Obstruction Information System (AWOIS) with the goal of identifying possible historic shipwrecks and other submerged cultural sites. SSEAS divers are trained to recognize historic shipwrecks and cultural sites, to record the site using photography and hand-drawn site plans, and to fill out Florida Master Site File recording forms. The SSEAS program consists of taking the Orientation to Underwater Archaeology for Sport Divers training course. This course includes classroom, confined water, and open water instruction. Upon completion, participants will receive an FPAN Certificate of Training; a NAUI, PADI, or SDI Specialty Certification may be possible as well. Once training is complete, SSEAS divers are able to perform all necessary tasks and are encouraged to begin investigating AWOIS sites.

Description: In celebration of the 2018 Florida Archaeology Month, "Heritage at Risk," the Deering Estate will host its 6th annual Archaeology Day.

Activities and programs for the entire family include hands-on activities and walking tours of the Estate's unique natural areas. Admission is reduced to $7 for ages 4 & older.

Every March, statewide programs and events celebrating Florida Archaeology Month are designed to encourage Floridians and visitors to learn more about the archaeology and history of the state, and to preserve these important parts of Florida's rich cultural heritage. This year's theme is dedicated to how sea level rise will affect important archaeological sites and landmarks in Florida.

Florida Archaeology Month is coordinated by the Florida Anthropological Society, and supported by the Department of State, Division of Historical Resources. Additional sponsors for 2018 include the Florida Archaeological Council, Florida Public Archaeology Network, state and local museums, historical commissions, libraries, and public and private school systems.

Southernmost Pre-Columbian Site

Location: Custom House Museum, 281 Front St, Key West, FL 33040

Description: Located just off the northeast corner of Key West, Stock Island was the second archaeological site recorded in Monroe County. The site is one of the biggest Pre-Columbian habitations ever known in the Keys, consisting of a black-earth mound and a large midden of shells, sea-turtle bones, and fish and shark remains. In this presentation, Ryan will present his ongoing dissertation research there, which seeks to determine whether Stock Island was a seasonal fishing ground used by mainland natives, or the site of a permanent year-round village. History is the Real Treasure - Della Scott Ireton

Description: The Spanish treasure fleet of 1733 wrecked in a violent hurricane along 80 miles of the Florida Keys. With the discovery of the first shipwreck in the late 1940s and the growth of scuba diving in the 1950s and 60s enabling treasure hunters to locate most of the rest of the fleet, these wrecks suffered from haphazard digging and the loss of much information. Today, these shipwrecks are among the oldest and most vibrant artificial reefs in the Keys. This lecture describes a State of Florida project to record and interpret the 1733 fleet that resulted in the production of a booklet and website devoted to telling the story of the fleet disaster and to promoting the archaeological importance of the sunken ships as tangible remains of our maritime heritage.

CRPT Workshop- Evergreen Cemetery

Bring your own Kayak or paddle board, if not you can rent paddle boards at Blueline Surf and Paddle Co. (561-744-7474) down the road. Please call Blueline in advance to reserve your board--they will help you attach to your vehicle to drive it over to the ONA. Please note Blueline charges approximately 30$ for board rental.

Meet in the North parking lot of the ONA (located on the left just before going over the bridge to Jupiter Island) at 11:00 am and one of the ONA staff will let you through the Gate and you can drive in and unload kayaks on the shore. NOTE: THIS IS NOT THE LIGHTHOUSE MUSEUM PARKING LOT, it is just a little further east on S. Beach Rd.

We will be meeting at 10:30 am in the parking lot and beginning the paddle at 10:45 am, giving us time to unload.

Description: Come learn about the archaeology of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area from an aquatic perspective with Florida Public Archaeology Network - Southeast Region!

This FREE guided paddle launching from the lighthouse shore encompasses archaeological, environmental, and historical knowledge of the ONA.
