Prehistoric Florida Foodways: Sustenance and Ceremony

Time: 2:00 pm til 3:00 pm

Location: Palm Beach County Library: Main Branch 3650 Summit Blvd. West Palm Beach, FL 33406

Description: For Palm Beach County Archaeological Society\'s April meeting, Archaeologist Kia Taylor Riccio will be exploring the foodways of prehistoric Florida cultures, with an emphasis on the Tequesta, Ais, and Jeaga peoples who occupied the coastal areas of southern and central Florida. The lecture will have two primary foci: we will explore the ways in which South Florida cultures caught, harvested, and prepared common foods, and the involvement of food and drink in their ceremonial practices. Furthermore, we will take an in-depth look at the Black Drink Ceremony, a prominent ritual amongst the South Florida Tribes in which tribal leaders prepared yaupon holly leaves (cacina) into an antioxidant-rich tea. Participants will receive samples of the cacina tea leaves for home-brew or to keep as a souvenir.
