Description: The Historical Society of Palm Beach County presents a lecture by Dr. Juan Riera, "The 16th Century Maritime World of La Florida," in commemoration of Florida's Quincentennial. A reception will immediately follow.Admission:

The 16th Century Maritime World of La Florida" and it will explore the role of ships, sailors, and mariners in the exploration, conquest, and settlement of Florida. Included will be information on the likes of Juan Ponce de Leon, Pedro Menendez de Aviles, Jean Ribault, and Hernando de Soto. The role of ships for communication, supplies, and every necessary aspect for survival will be discussed as well the need for Florida to be settled as a way of protecting shipping that was vital for the Spanish Empire. And conversely the decline of Spanish naval power in Florida for other European powers to flourish.
