Ixtab: The Creation of the Ancient Maya Suicide Goddess

Time: 7:00 pm til 8:00 pm

Location: Harry P. Leu Gardens

Description: Ixtab is believed to be the ancient Maya goddess who shepherds Maya who commit suicide to paradise. However, in Yucatan, Mexico, where the suicide rate is double the national average, this myth is used to escape a necessary discourse about suicide as a major public health issue.

Rachael Kangas is graduate student at the University of Central Florida, studying Maya archaeology under Dr. Arlen Chase. She has worked on four archaeological projects in three countries and is writing a thesis about the site of Santa Rita Corozal, Belize. The research presented was completed with Dr. Reyes-Foster at UCF, who has carried out cultural fieldwork in Yucatan, Mexico for over 10 years.
