A Look at Florida's Ancient Past

Trout Lake Nature Center invites individuals who enjoy learning about Central Florida’s natural world to join them on Jan 21st at 10 am to 12:30 pm for a look into the distant past. Kevin Gidusko with the Florida Public Archeology Network will present three segments on Florida’s ancient history.

Prehistoric Peninsula:
Florida and its inhabitants have changed dramatically throughout the course of time. The landmass has risen from the sea, expanded and shrunk; megladon, mammoth, and more once swam in the seas or walked the land; there were native people who lived here before the Seminole, before the Timucua. Mr. Gidusko will give us a brief overview of what archeologist and geologist believe to be the story of Florida’s past.

Prehistoric Toolbox: Examination of Native American Tools and Weapons
Native Americans in Florida were extremely resourceful using all elements of their environment for survival: from shark tooth atlatls to whelk shelled hammers. Some tools were rough but functional; some had added decorations for beauty or perhaps religious significance.
