Description: Earthen and shell mounds have played a role in Florida’s prehistory for thousands of years. These mounds served as places of burial, ceremony, and residency and were once a major focal point among Florida’s Native Americans. But they have served many roles in Florida’s history, as places for social gatherings, antiquarianism, and Florida’s first archaeological investigations. Prehistoric mounds continue as focal points for Florida’s rich prehistory and their preservation insures that they will remain a part of our state’s lasting landscape.
