In many communities around the state, local archaeologists were pioneers in involving and engaging the public as sites were excavated andINSTITUTIONS HOST discoveries made. The idea for a state-wide program focused on public archaeological engagement was born from these examples in places such as Pensacola, Tampa, and St. Augustine. An initiative by Dr. Judy Bense at the University of West Florida (UWF) resulted in legislation providing for the creation of what is today the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN). Fifteen years ago, FPAN became a program of UWF with professionals stationed throughout Florida and serving everyWhile FPAN is a program administered by the University of West Florida, programming in six of our county.
