Archaeology On Tap! Silver Glen Springs Before the Yearling

Time: 5:00 pm til 7:00 pm

Location: First Magnitude Brewing Company 1220 SE Veitch St, Gainesville, Florida 32601

Description: During our summertime hiatus from scheduled rides, we still want to provide y'all with some interesting lessons on Florida history…with both bikes and beer involved!
In lieu of HBG’s slated tour, we are riding our bikes to First Magnitude brewpub for Archaeology On Tap: Silver Glen Run Before The Yearling. History Bike Gainesville and Florida Public Archaeology Network are offering a “pop-up” archaeology event at the brewery with a focus on an actual first magnitude spring - Silver Glen Springs in the Ocala National Forest. Dr. Ken Sassaman from UF’s Laboratory of Southeastern Archaeology will discuss his work on Silver Glen Run, which was the setting for Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings’ book, The Yearling. According to Dr. Sassaman “4,000 year’s ago, Silver Glen Run was Grand Central Station!”
So ride your bikes over to First Magnitude, Saturday July 30th from 5-7PM! Let’s have a cold beer and chat about old stuff! Weather permitting, we will have a table set up out back in First Mag’s beer garden area under the oaks, with related artifacts and archaeologists present for discussion..There will be plenty of time for Q&A, so start thinking of some good questions
