The heart of Apalachee mission province, and its most
important village, was the self-sufficient and prosperous mission complex of San
Luis de Talamali (Figure 8). San Luis consisted
of a church and friary, a plaza, an Apalachee council house and a number of Spanish
and Indian residences. Adjacent to the mission village was a wooden fort. San
Luis was more of a Spanish town than an Indian village, as the resident Spaniards
forced most of the Indian inhabitants to live away from the village (Hann 1998:84;Boyd,
et al., 1951:25).
